Had I Listened

Today I heard whimpers,
Low groans and heavy breathing,
Within me restlessness arose.

Today I heard whispers,
Low screams carrying a message rare,
About the many ills I woo to myself.

Today I heard a song solemn,
Sung softly yet piercing by east chilly winds,
Complaining, disapproving of my suicidal tendencies.

Today, before I slid the blade on my veins,
My shadow did me forewarn,

Alas! I should have listened, and alive now be.
